The main area of scientific interest of our research group comprises studies of biologically active secondary metabolites of plants and plant pathogenic fungi and their role in plant-pathogen interactions and disease development. We are interested also in recognition of secondary metabolites impact on plant response to environmental stresses such as drought or frost. These studies aim at identification of the low molecular weight compounds synthesized by the studied organisms using mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy methods as well as their quantitative analysis using high performance liquid chromatography methods. We cooperate with other research groups of the Institute and results of our experiments are integrated with plant physiological, phytopathological and genetic data in attempts of finding correlations between different plant resistance processes. Glucosinolates of the Brassicaceae family; flavonoids and other phenolic compounds of legumes (Lupinus spp., Medicago truncatula, Pisum sativum), Arabidopsis thaliana, barley (Hordeum vulgare) and fodder grasses from the Lolium-Festuca species complex as well as secondary metabolites of plant pathogenic fungi Leptosphaeria spp., Fusarium spp., Pyrenophora spp. Colletotrichum spp., Ramularia collo-cygni have been the recent objects of our studies.

Research profile

  • Identification of plant and fungal secondary metabolites.
  • Quantitative analysis of low molecular weight compounds.
  • Studies of biological activity of secondary metabolites in plant ? pathogen interaction and in plant responses to abiotic stresses.

Methods:

  • mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy methods in structural analysis of secondary metabolites,
  • preparative chromatography of secondary metabolites,
  • high performance (HPLC) and ultraperformance (UPLC) liquid chromatography.

Current research activities

  • Identification of plant pathogenic fungi and their toxic or antinutritional compounds that are present in leguminous plants (pea, lupine) seeds. The aim of this work is to assess both microbiological and toxicological safety of plant foods and forages.
  • Studies on changes of secondary and primary metabolites in leaves of fodder grasses from the Lolium/ Festuca species complex as a result of different abiotic stresses (frost, drought, excessive salt contents) and acclimation to cold as a part of mechanisms increasing plant tolerance to damaging environmental conditions.
  • Identification of secondary metabolites of herbal plants and studies of the influence of these compounds on medicinal properties of plant material.
