The Institute today
Scientific output and activities of the InstitutePublicationsFor the last five years researchers from the Institute prepared 431 publications: 97 with given IF, 104 monographs, 210 in Polish journals. Many papers were also published in popular scientific magazines and journals for specialists and farmers. The scientific staff of the IPG published also numerous abstracts in Polish and English. The average number of publications in the last six years is approximately 2 publications per person per year. Membership in Editorial Boards and Scientific SocietiesScientists of the Institute are active on the international forum as members of editorial boards (e.g.: in the editorial board of Mycotoxin Research, Biometrical Letters, Genetic Resources and Crop Evolution, Plant Breeding, Journal of Applied Genetics), as well as members of the executive committees of several associations such as AEP, the Pisum Genetics Association, the International Lupin Association. Furthermore, they are members of executive committees of the EUCARPIA sections and IAEA/FAO experts. Most of the researchers belong to relevant scientific societies and eleven persons are members of national executive committees of scientific associations. Fifteen persons are representatives of the IPG in different international organisations, such as the European Cytogeneticists Association (E.C.A.), the International Flowering Group, the Scandinavian Society for Plant Physiology (SSPP), the British Society for Plant Pathology (BSPP), International Association for Plant Tissue Culture (IAPTC), Eurosolar, Biometric Society, the European Fusarium Committee, and the Triticeae Cooperative. The IPG is also an institutional member of the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA). Centre of Excellence (PAGEN)Starting from the year 2003 the Institute of Plant Genetics, Polish Academy of Science hosts the Centre of Excellence in Plant Agrobiology and Molecular Genetics (PAGEN) based in the Institute and supported by the UE. The PAGEN centre is created in order to improve the quality of research through closer co-operation with the EU leading scientific institutions. It will enable a flow of expertise from advanced EU teams to experienced scientists and young researchers in Poland and restore Polish research potential, particularly in the light of the future Union membership. Moreover, the Centre of Excellence will closely cooperate with end-users, including breeders, representatives of government and local organisations to help in working out the directions of agricultural policy. Organisation of national and international meetings and networking with other institutesEach year the Institute organises some scientific meetings, both international and national. In the last six years IPG organised 17 international conferences and workshops, as well as 41 national meetings (25 national conferences, 5 workshops and 7 training courses). The members of the scientific staff were also lecturers and presenters at several training courses for specialists and farmers that were organised by other institutions. Prizes, awards, patents, genotypesSome of the researchers are co-authors of several patented cultivars of pea, lupin and grasses, as well as numerous plant genotypes, including all main groups of agricultural crops and two rich collections of plant pathogenic fungi. The Institute is co-owner of four Festulolium cultivars (Felopa, Sulino, Rakopan and Agula). The Sulino cultivar was awarded with the Golden Medal during the International Fair POLAGRA‘ FARM 2000 in Poznań. The IPG PAS also obtained the "Green Poznań" prize (1st award for the best organisation of the recreation area around the Institute in 1996). Dr. Arkadiusz Kosmala obtained the Prime Minister Award in 2005 for PhD thesis (defended in November 2004): "Cytogenetic and molecular analysis of the introgression form of Lolium multiflorum Lam. with the genes of Festuca pratensis Huds." Prize on Plant GeneticsSince 1993 the Scientific Board awards annually a national prize for young scientists for the best research project in plant genetics. The prize is named after Prof. Stefan Barbacki – founder and the first director of the Institute. The prize is offered to scientists not older than 35.
