General information

The map of Poland

The Institute of Plant Genetics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IPG PAS) is an important centre of agrobiology and molecular genetics. Since the early 1990’s the State Committee for Scientific Research, which is responsible for the evaluation of the standard of research in our country, has been rating it as one of the best institutes in Poland in agricultural sciences (grade "A").

The IPG PAS, apart from agricultural universities, is the only research institute focusing on plant genetics and connected areas in Poland. The main specialities are as follows: genomics, cytogenetics, biotechnology, in vitro cultures, plant resistance and biometry.

Research areas cover:

  • genetic and physical chromosome mapping (including markers for agricultural characters and QTLs) of Pisum, Lupinus and Brassica,
  • the recognition, cloning and assessment of the functions of genes involved in potato resistance to low temperatures,
  • introgression of suitable genes into rye, triticale and fodder grasses,
  • using in situ hybridisation (GISH and FISH) for the cytological estimation of relationships between taxa and the identification of distant hybrids,
  • the improvement of plant resistance to diseases and environmental stresses, and studies of plant pathogens,
  • the improvement of methods of obtaining doubled haploid lines and distant hybrids (cereals, grasses, oilseeds),
  • development of new biometric and statistical methods useful for plant genetics and breeding.
