Institute of Plant Genetics
Polish Academy of Sciences

General information

The Institute of Plant Genetics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IPG PAS) conducts research in the field of agricultural sciences, in the discipline of agriculture and horticulture, in accordance with the highest standards and disseminates the results of this research. For seventy years, IPG PAS has been an important research center where scientists take up new challenges in the field of basic research and develop innovative research methods. Their achievements in this field contribute not only to the development of knowledge within their scientific discipline, but also within related disciplines, including biological sciences. The work carried out at IPG PAS supports sustainable agriculture and solves emerging problems related to plant functioning, including those related to climate change.

The Institute's employees and doctoral students actively participate in interdisciplinary cooperation with leading institutions and research teams, integrating their research with the scientific community both in Poland and abroad.

IPG PAS strives to strengthen and promote its research potential and achieve international competitiveness. In the last decade, the Institute has received two ERA Chair grants: BIO-TALENT (The Creation of the Department of Integrative Plant Biology, FP7-ERA Chairs-Pilot Call-2013), the first ERA Chair project in Poland, and NANOPLANT (The Creation of the Department of Plant Nanotechnology, H2020-WIDESPREAD-2018-04, in progress). International projects have been or are being implemented, such as EPPN2020 (European Plant Phenotyping Network 2020, H2020-INFRAIA-2016-1), INCREASE (Intelligent Collections of Food Legumes Genetic Resources for European Agrofood Systems, H2020-EU.3.2.1.1.) , Legume Generation (Boosting Innovation in Breeding for the Next Generation of Legume Crops for Europe, HORIZON-CL6-2022-BIODIV-02) and BELIS (Breeding European Legumes for Increased Sustainability, HORIZON-CL6-2022-BIODIV-02).

In recent years, over 80 different research projects have been carried out at the IPG PAS. The largest group are projects financed by the National Science Center. Other very important sources of research financing are: the Biological Progress program of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the programs of the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR), the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP), the National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA), and the Agency for Development and Modernization of Agriculture (ARiMR). There is also cooperation with seed, breeding and biotechnology companies.

The Institute promotes the education of young scientists by running, together with other Poznań institutes, the Poznań Doctoral School of Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1994, the Stefan Barbacki National Award was established for young scientists, awarded annually.

Scientific research at IPG PAS, performed on cultivated and model plants, focuses on 4 thematic areas.
