The ERA Chair holder wanted

The Director of the Institute of Plant Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPG PAS), Poznan, POLAND ? prof. Bogdan WOLKO announces an open competition for a full-time position of Head of the Department of Integrative Plant Biology (ERA Chair holder). The ERA Chairs project "The Creation of the Department of Integrative Plant Biology (BIO-TALENT)", realized by the Institute of Plant Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, is supported by the EU FP7 Programme.

We are looking for a dynamic scientist to establish an interdisciplinary research group, combining experiment and theory, located at the IPG PAS, Poznan, Poland. The position is open to candidates holding at least a PhD degree, and who are expected to have an outstanding scientific track record of successful research in plant genetics and genomics, with clear evidence of leadership, and a strong interest in integrative plant biology. These qualifications should be documented by publications in international journals, as well as a record of outreach activities in the field of plant genetics and genomics. Practical experience in applying for research funding and directing research work is mandatory. An interest in crossing research borders to establish new experimental and mathematical approaches in system biology, and the ability to communicate with other scientists at the interface between theoretical and experimental research will play a key role. Organisational skills and experience in managing projects are essential. A good command of English is required.

 

The successful candidate will develop an independent research group supported by the EU FP7 Programme, covering the salary of the ERA Chair holder and salaries of 7 team ERA Chair holder is for 5 years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension after the lifespan of this project, provided additional external funds for the research are obtained by the Chair holder and/or the team member(s). The team build by the ERA Chair holder (the BIO-TALENT team) will be consist of 2 experienced researchers, 2 post-docs (one senior researcher of 5-10 years after PhD and one junior researcher of up to 5 years after PhD), 2 PhD students with one obliged to aim for a European Industrial Doctorate. It is also obligatory to compose the ERA team with a mix of more and less experienced researchers. The team will closely cooperate with the innovation broker (employed for the last 3 years of the project). All members of the BIO-TALENT team will be fully paid by the project (the information on gross and net salaries will be available for the ERA Chair holder applicant, after direct contact with the Project Coordinator). Substantial money is allocated to conference fees, subsistence and international travels of the BIO-TALENT team. However, no money i allocated to research. Funding of the experimental work totally relies on grants received by the ERA Chair holder from international or Polish sources. The department formed by the ERA Chair holder will undergo equal rights and obligations as for the other departments of the Institute. He/she will be given a high level of autonomy in research directions, and in the choice of the members of BIO-TALENT research team, and will be offered a fixed-term job contract (5 years, for the whole lifespan of the Project).


Obligations of the ERA Chair Holder

According to the BIO-TALENT Project approved by the European Commission, the ERA Chair Holder is obliged to organise the following events (apart from regular research):

- 20 lectures, 6 one-day workshops, 2 summer schools (two days each);

- co-supervision of a European Industrial Doctorate.

The funds for the organisation of the above mentioned events will be covered by the project.

Attention: during the contract the position of the ERA Chair holder must be the main and only employment of the applicant.

Employment at the IPG PAS will be in the form of a temporary job contract, and the payment will include insurance and health care, in agreement with the rules of Polish legislation.

The city of Poznan has 550 thous. inhabitants. It is one of the largest cities in Poland, with a large academic centre with numerous universities and research institutes. It is located 300 km westwards from Warszawa (Warsaw), the capital of Poland, and 250 km eastwards from Berlin, the capital of Germany. The city is visited by many foreigners participating in numerous fairs organised at the Poznan International Fair Grounds, as well as students, researchers, businessmen, and tourists. The city is friendly and safe. A great number of students (over 100 thous.) makes it lively and full of various events. The city is convenient to work in and to spend leisure time, due to its beautiful surroundings (Wielkopolski National Park with its forests and lakes). It is also the capital of a large agricultural plain.

 

Selection procedure

To ensure equal treatment of all candidates the international selection panel, with a gender balance, will review the offers. IPG PAS will be represented by the Director of the Institute, Prof. Bogdan WOLKO, and the Project Coordinator, Prof. Malgorzata JEDRYCZKA. The panel will also comprise 2 high profile scientists employed at foreign research institutes, and 1 representative of the agro-industry. IPG PAS has been awarded the logo of ?HR Excellence in Research?, what means the provisions of the Charter and Code are fulfilled and will be respected in the selection procedure.

The recruitment process will be carried out in a  two-step selection procedure:

Step 1: the selection of top candidates (all candidates will be informed about the results of this selection step by May 31).

In addition to the score of the: (i) scientific, (ii) academic and (iii) industrial criteria (listed below), the candidates will have to present the topics of their research and the management, and commercialisation of their projects results (coordinated and/or participated). The applicant will also have to present a plan of the composition of the BIO-TALENT team ? resembling the planned research team as closely as possible.

Step 2: interview at the Institute of Plant Genetics PAS in Poznan

Short-listed applicants will be invited to the Institute for a personal interview with the above mentioned selection panel; or alternatively through to a video conference.. The dates of the interview/video conference are fixed: June 10-12. Results of the interview will be crucial for the evaluation process. At this step the scientific excellence of the applicant will still play an key role, although other criteria, such as a clear view of the candidate?s plan for the following 5 year research at the Institute, will be of high importance. Candidates will be informed about the result of the selection on June 13. According to the rules of the Institute, the final decision depends on the approval of the Director of the Institute, the Committee of Scientific Development of the Institute and the results of a secret vote at a meeting of the Scientific Board of the Institute. The candidate will be informed on the final decision not later than on the day after the voting.

The evaluation procedure will take due account of the candidate's overall research activity and research results, and it will be scored against the following criteria (Y N means 5 or 0 points):

 

I. Scientific (the total score multiplied by 3):

         1. Number of publications as the first author (5-10 ? 3 points; 11-15 ? 6 points;

              16-20 ? 9 points; 21-25 ? 12 points; 26-30 ? 15 points; >31 ? 20 points).

         2. Number of publications as corresponding author (5-10 ? 3 points; 11-15 ? 6 points;

            16-20 ? 9 points; 21-25 ? 12 points; 26-30 ? 15 points; >31 ? 20 points).

3. H-index (5-10 ? 3 points; 11-15 ? 5 points; 16-20 ? 10 points; >21 ? 15 points).

4. International projects (as a project coordinator) Y N (5 points).

5. National projects (as a project coordinator) Y N (3 points).

The main aim of the project is to raise the scientific excellence of the Institute of Plant Genetics PAS, and this is why the points calculated to measure the value of scientific achievements of the candidate will be weighted, and multiplied by 3. The aim is to maintain a good balance between research and other activities.

The plan of cooperation with the scientific staff of the Institute will be of a great importance (additional points given), especially if all or most of existing Departments are considered. The fulfilment of this declaration will be controlled by the Project Coordinator.

 

Documents to be submitted:

1)     Detailed CV, including Hirsch index and the list of citations (Web of knowledge/Web of science).

2)     Cover letter.

3)     List of all original publications, from the oldest to the most recent, each with the number of citations (according to the Web of knowledge/Web of science) and Impact factor of the journal in the year of publication and in 2012. The name of the candidate should be in bold type, and papers in which she/he was a corresponding author should be highlighted.

4)     List of national and international projects: a) coordinated, b) participated, including the information on granted funds and project results, publications, commercialization of products or methodologies.

5)     Names of researchers giving the references. The reference letters shall be submitted separately by the referees.

6)     List of academic skills, including experience in teaching, research team leadership, administrative duties, PhD and MSc supervision/mentoring.

7)     List of foreign fellowships, studies, sabbatical stays, practical and theoretical trainings in a foreign country (mobility).

8)     List of patents, cooperation with the industry, national and international projects including the cooperation with the industry (please list the granted funds and the result of each project).

9)     Other skills, not listed above, but important for the project.

10) Vision of the Department of Integrative Plant Biology:

a)      research topic;

b)      the composition of the BIO-TALENT team and support of their scientific development;

c)      cooperation with the Director and the Project Coordinator;

d)      fulfilment of project obligations (publications, training of young researchers, post-docs and Ph.D. students);

e)      cooperation with the industry;

f)        cooperation with existing departments of the Institute (please suggest proposals of possible topics of joint-research);

g)      sustainability of the project.
